Step 1: Issue 100 - ESL Writer Self-Teaching Guide and Workbook
Introducing the Richard Dauer 3-Step Writing System with Examples & Assignment Exercises. Self-study Developmental training for ESL essay Writers. Introducing Step 1.
Get a Notebook for Your ESL Writing Journal
I insist you get a notebook for your writing journal and use it for all the exercises in this book, writing out each one as you encounter them. You’ll have created a record of your discoveries, a manual you can turn to at the end of the process.
Many exercises involve reflective writing. Reflective writing documents what and how you think about a topic we discuss. In reflective writing, you just let the words flow without allowing the internal editor to stop you. The rules are straightforward. You can set a timer for fifteen, twenty, and sometimes thirty minutes and write.
Begin writing longhand on paper. Just let words hit the page from your thoughts about the topic without stopping to edit. You will surprise yourself by how freely ideas flow when you do not second-guess.
In time, we will use a structured approach and allow time for correcting your mistakes, but the lessons you teach yourself by reading your reflective writing texts are invaluable to improving your writing.
Assignment
Find yourself a notebook and use it only for your ESl writing practice. Some students have a notebook for study notes and vocabulary practice, but others use one notebook.
You'll do better if you separate out the two. Have one for study notes and other exercises and one dedicated for your writing assignments.
Later you may transfer your hand-written sentences to the computer for example, but to gain the most, start by writing out your assignments in long hand.
