General Overview of the Proficiency Exercises
Here on Online ESL Lessons one of our sections is Proficiency Exercises. This section is designed to reproduce, to replicate proficiency sections found on standardized tests such as:
the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) or t
he Functional Capacity Evaluation, and the
Certificate in Advanced English), as well as the
International English Language Testing System and the
Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based Test (TOEFL - iBT).
So, when you complete a proficiency exercise you are gaining vocabulary and experience in test taking. Now for the Directions for the Online ESL Lessons exercises.
They all use one of three formats for the exercises. The three formats are list, gap and multiple choice, for now, but as we add practice exercises news ones arise.
The title of the exercise tells you what it is.
For instance the title No. 200 TOEIC List Vocabulary Exercise tells you it is a list,
where No. 201 TOEIC Gap Vocabulary Exercise tells you it is a gap and
No. 202 TOEIC Multiple Choice Vocabulary Exercise is a multiple choice format.
Word Formation Proficiency Exercises
The word-formation type of a proficiency test question can be found in any number of tests published — TOEIC, TOEFL iBT, IELTS, FC, AG — because it is such an effective method to test for English fluency.
The word formation exercise, tests your ability to create the correct word from a word's root, to make the sentence coherent.
Let's take the root word conclude. So what are some of the versions that may be used to make a sentence coherent? How about concluding, concluded, concludes, conclusion, conclusive, or conclusively.
Now what form of the word could be used to make this sentence coherent?
Matt quickly came to the— … here's is the blank…— that Jane was not telling the truth. So the answer is the word conclusion.
Matt quickly came to the conclusion that Jane was not telling the truth, is a coherent sentence.
So you have to think about what kind of word would make this sentence correct.
These are word-formation type proficiency test questions.3

This cultivates higher-order thinking skills and promotes intellectual curiosity and growth.
